How To Measure For Electrical Underfloor Heating

Updated: May 29, 2023

There are many advantages to installing underfloor Heating. With one being it can be easy to install and simple to measure. In this post we will show 3 simple ways to measure your room for the install of underfloor heating.

Before we show you or three easy methods, there are a few important differences between Sticky Mats, Foil Mats and Loose Cables to understand:

  • Mats wattage per m2 are not determined by cable spacing, but by how powerful the cable is. Mats come in 100, 150 and 200 watts. With 200 being the most powerful.

  • Loose cable kits, on the other hand, use the same power cable. The wattage per M2 is determined based on spacing between the cables (similarly to water UFH). Correct spacing is required to avoid hot and cold spots.

Although explained below, we would like to put emphasis on the fact that the cables can not be cut. This means you are always better under calculating the meterage required than over calculating. Our three recommended measurement techniques can be seen below:

Method 1

Method 1 is a common method used for smaller areas such as toilets and bathrooms. A tip for smaller areas with obstacles such as toilets or baths, is to use loose cable underfloor heating. This does not eliminate the use of Mats, often mats can still be a good choice if your room and obstacles are spaced out.

Method 2

Method 2 is another common method with just a simple change, in the calculation to reduce the chance of over ordering.

Method 3

Method 3 is better for spaces with large obstacles such kitchen units, appliances and rooms with large chimney breasts. These areas will often suit mat kits. As they are better for primary heating and are easy to lay if you are working with square or rectangle areas.
