Energy Efficiency of Underfloor Heating

Updated: May 29, 2023

With energy costs rising all over the world, everyone is looking and talking about how to save money on their bills. Underfloor heating is becoming increasingly popular for new builds and for people carrying out renovations/ extensions on their properties. Warm floors are not the only benefit of underfloor heating. Energy efficiency plays a huge role in its benefits.

The use of radiators is still seen as the norm, however when looking at new builds, the private tenure dwellings are often kitted out with underfloor heating (especially in living areas).

There is a lot of confusion around underfloor heating. People hear that it operates using lower temperatures than radiators, so they assume it offers lower heat. However, although lower temperatures are used, underfloor heating can achieve the same heat level throughout your home as radiators. This is where the energy efficiency comes into play, it has been estimated that underfloor heating uses 15-40% less energy than radiators. The reason for this efficiency is a result of underfloor heating systems creating an even spread of head throughout the room (this can be guaranteed by installing to a professional UFH design).

When switching to underfloor heating purely for energy efficiency benefits, it is important that you select the correct system for your home. The above information is based off water underfloor heating systems connected to the boiler.

Electric systems can cost more when it comes to bills, as gas is around 3-4 times cheaper than electricity. However, electric is still a great choice for smaller areas such as bathrooms, giving the luxury feel of underfloor heating which can be controlled on a separate thermostat.
